Tea and Tattle is a modest, inviting tea house tucked into the basement of a collectible bookshop on Great Russell Street, just opposite the British Museum—a spot that feels more like a quiet London refuge than a typical café. This setting perfectly suits anyone wanting to slow down after wandering the nearby museum or browsing the books above. The space itself is cozy and somewhat intimate, with a warm, low-key atmosphere that encourages sitting back with a cuppa and a book or enjoying a calm conversation away from the city bustle.

Their offerings lean heavily on the traditional afternoon tea experience, with tiered trays featuring sandwiches, scones accompanied by clotted cream and a selection of house-made jams (such as raspberry and vanilla or strawberry and black pepper), and a well-rounded array of cakes like coffee and walnut or lemon drizzle. While they keep things classic, the menu also thoughtfully accommodates some dietary preferences—though dairy-free cake options are limited, it’s straightforward to customize sandwiches to leave out cheese or other dairy components.

Tea and Tattle draws a mix of visitors: locals who appreciate a serene spot for afternoon tea, museum-goers who want a nearby place to unwind, and travelers looking for an authentic, less commercial London tea experience. Booking ahead is advisable since the space is small and popular, especially in the afternoon when the teatime crowd fills the room. The attentive and friendly staff help the visit feel personal rather than formal.

Without outdoor seating or a bustling café vibe, this place is best enjoyed as a quiet stop during the less hectic parts of the afternoon, when the light filtering down into the basement creates a snug, contemplative mood. It’s ideal for solo visitors craving a peaceful break, small groups celebrating a gentle occasion, or anyone who values a tea room experience that focuses on thoughtful details rather than spectacle.

Delightful afternoon tea for one! The staff was very attentive and worked with me to accommodate my dietary restrictions. There aren't many dairy free options available, but it was easy to request the cheese, etc to be left off the sandwiches. Thankfully my allergy isn't too severe, as I don't believe there were any dairy free cake options. But the food was delicious, even without the clotted cream! Such a relaxing and delicious way to spend an hour. I did not have a reservation, but I came by myself well before tea time. If you intend to have a proper tea with a group, make sure to reserve a table!

My wife and I had a most delightful experience here our last full day in London. We had just returned from a week away in Cornwall and wanted to see a bit more of this wonderful city before our flight home the next day. We were lucky enough to walk in off the street and be seated downstairs with just a short wait. We opted for the full 'tea room experience' with a lovely tiered serving tray adorned with finger sandwiches, scones w/ cream & jam plus miniature deserts and a hot kettle of black tea. The entire experience was one which we will not forget soon. A must do while in this great city!

Discovered this hidden gem for an affordable afternoon tea in London. Situated in the basement of a bookshop offering titles from around the world is Tea and Tattle. This charming tea parlour is an ideal retreat after a morning at the British Museum, conveniently located just opposite! You can choose between a shared afternoon tea at £38 or opt for £19 each, enjoying tea, sandwiches, scones, and cakes. They even serve a glass of homemade lemonade and a selection of jams.

Lovely little tearoom just downstairs in a collectible bookshop. Made reservations for 3 of us the day before (I believe they're required, it's a small place), and they were very helpful on the phone. Classic afternoon tea set for great prices. Directly across from the British Museum. All the sandwiches and desserts were delicious with a large variety (only got picture of one tray of our two). All our teas were perfectly prepared. Service was quick. Highly recommend!

Love this place! Kind service and very tasty food. Scone was great! Clotted cream and raspberry vanilla jam on scone was heavenly. Sandwich bread had nice texture that i really enjoyed. Such a cozy place that you can just relax and enjoy the time.

Great alternative to the expensive hotel lobby teas. Fabulous scones served with lots of clotted cream and delicious jams, sandwiches, and cake. Cozy atmosphere in the basement under a book shop, across fr The British Museum. It reminded us of a place we found decades ago and then could never find again. Highly recommend for your afternoon repast.

Afternoon Tea was a delight. The desserts and Scones were great. The finger sandwiches were nice. Some of the flavors weren't to my preferences, but they seemed fresh and well-made. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is very quaint and intimate.
